OWOP spawn in 2023

LaunchedOctober 27th, 2016

Our World of Pixels (OWOP) is a sister website of OWOT where users place pixels on an infinite canvas. Ever since its creation in 2016, OWOP has been hosted by InfraRaven on the same server as OWOT. The site is managed by Eldit along with an inconsistently active team of admins, moderators and developers. Eldit is also the co-owner of Uvias: the login system for both OWOT and OWOP.

OWOP's canvas is largely art-centric, with a diverse array of pixel art (both original and pasted) blanketing the Mainpage. The site is overseen by a group of moderators whose roles include protecting art and banning spammers. The aforementioned mods are widely scrutinized for supposedly authoritarian behavior, with one user recounting how they were banned for speaking at the same time as a moderator; among many other similar cases.

Like OWOT, OWOP has a Discord server which hosts much of the community's culture. There is also an in-site chat.

Several OWOT users arrived from OWOP, like Bzuki and Jamel.

History

Creation

On October 27th, 2016, OWOP was released by Eldit as a school project. It was initially located at cursors.me/pixels, but was redirected to yourworldofpixels.com on November 12th — after InfraRaven was contacted about the project — and then to ourworldofpixels.com by November 17th [1]. It was also on the 17th that the site's existence was first advertised to the public.

Accounts update

Eldit and the other OWOP devs have been working on an accounts update since 201? and have yet to release it as of 2025.

FP mentioned the accounts update in his 2023 interview with AndreiXYZ, comparing it to a long awaited update in OWOT that would allow world owners to create different tiers of membership with different levels of permissions.

Currently, OWOP users cannot claim worlds like they do in OWOT, though they can still request moderator perms on personal worlds.

r/place(2022 and 2023)

The OWOP community was involved in the r/place events for both 2022 and 2023.

In 2022, they were able to maintain a small "OWOP" sign up until the end of the event. During the process, they negotiated with much larger communities such as Homestuck and r/wallstreetbets in order to keep their spot on the canvas.

The 2022 OWOP logo has since been copied onto Wplace, another pixel canvas that blew up in 2025.

OWOP was not able to make it onto the final canvas of r/place 2023.

Culture

Pixel Art

A large portion of high quality pixel art in OWOP is copied from elsewhere on the internet, though the site does contain a number of skilled pixel artists.

Scripting

If you want to experience being a god on OWOP, a world called /aprilfools(it was made for april fools) exists. Or if you want to run your own custom OWOP server, fp has a custom OWOP server.

In 2022, the user Lapis was able to animate Bad Apple on a personal instance of OWOP.

OWOP's Spawn has historically been home to a variety of interactive scripts, such as a working calculator and a compass that pointed to user cursors. There were also games such as Minesweeper, Pokemon and chess, which were all fully playable on the site.

Scripting on OWOP is a rather spectacular sight to see, as it usually involves summoning a massive swarm of cursors which would be visible to all players.

Moderation

OWOP moderators will often protect high quality art at spawn. Users can also request mods to protect art at more distant locations.

Discord Server

The OWOP Discord used to be a lot more active around 2022 and 2023, but is considerably more quiet nowadays.

It includes a channel named #views-from-main, where admins share interesting Mainpage screenshots just like the #screenshots channel in the OWOT Discord. There is a #gateway channel that serves the same function as OWOT's Goatway, allowing users to view and interact with the in-site chat from the comfort of Discord.

#archive exists to hold hourly screenshots of OWOP's Spawn(1000 pixels in every direction), which could then be compiled to make timelapses.

#donations announces every donation to InfraRaven's Paypal(which also exists to fund OWOT). OWOP's paint speed is stated to increase for one hour for every Euro donated.

There are also channels named #bugs, #suggestions-forum and #report which allow users to communicate directly with the site's multiple moderators and developers.

#drama is a place for users to discuss controversial subjects within the community. #hell started off as a prison for misbehaving users, but has since developed into a shitposting channel inhabited by users such as AndreiXYZ.

OWOP2

OWOP2, the hypothetical sequel to OWOP, is a running joke that dates back to 2018. Eldit himself has referenced it several times, though there are no signs that a sequel is actually in the works.

Countrysim

The Spawn of /planetsim

/countrysim is a popular OWOP world dedicated to drawing fictional continents and nations. It contains a thriving subcommunity that has been active since 2017/2018, and has its own Discord server separate from the primary OWOP Discord.

It has a sister world in /planetsim.

Happyworld392, a main world member on OWOT, is an active user in the Countrysim community.

Interactions with OWOT

There doesn't seem to be much direct interactions between OWOT and OWOP. Unlike with YWOT, which shares much of the same framework with OWOT, OWOP is an entirely different site that OWOT scripts cannot be ported to.

That is not to say that the two communities are entirely separate, however. The two sites share many users, and there seems to be at least a small pipeline of new members finding OWOT from OWOP(with many of them first finding OWOP from r/place).

Shared users with OWOT

Eldit

Eldit is the lead developer of OWOP. He co-owns Uvias, the login system for both OWOT and OWOP, with FP.

InfraRaven

InfraRaven hosts OWOP alongside OWOT.

He used to hop into the OWOP Discord semi-frequently in order to share updates on Spooks.

Daydun

Daydun was a former OWOP dev who left the project after a series of internal drama.

On OWOT, he is known for creating several animated patterns at Spawn, which were generated with an octant-based implementation of his project daydun random.

AndreiXYZ

In the OWOP Discord, Andrei is primarily active in the #hell channel, which was created to contain misbehaving users.

He and another #hell user named Vvictor are currently the server's most active members and would consistently lobotomize themselves for public entertainment(i.e. shitposting).

The two of them are still going at it to this day, and on a daily basis, no less.

Happyworld

OWOT was my gateway drug to countrysim which is like one of the best worst things i discovered (owot itself also falls in that category). I cant really say owot or countrysim had a mainly negative or positive impact on me.

Happyworld392 has been an active member of the Countrysim subcommunity since 2020.

She has uploaded multiple Countrysim-inspired music videos on her Youtube channel.

Artman/Martan

Artman is a former main world member who also has a presence on Countrysim.

Bzuki

Jamel

Jamel was a semi-active user on OWOP before he found OWOT. During 2022, he posted several primitive animations in the OWOP Discord.

Today, he cringes heavily at his time on the pixel canvas.

Moth

An OWOP user who briefly visited the OWOT Discord in early 2025. Upon being given a tour of the server, he was delighted to find another moth enthusiast in Catha'Vi, who was going by MothCultLeader at the time.

Trivia

  • OWOP is often described as an infinite version of r/place, despite being created in 2016, one year before r/place.
  • Lapis, a prominent OWOP user, is also an active scripter in the Discord server for Slope, a popular Flash game whose world record used to be held by a YWOT user named Kylaxial.
