andrew badr launched ywot on august 2, 2009 as an art project. badr first created owot in 2010 as a site for unrestricted scripting, as opposed to ywot. but he shut it down in august. then, infraraven began working on a new version of owot and added more features to it.

then in october 2017 a new version got made, using node.js and now it is maintained by "FP"{{efn|Quotes were added to prevent mistranslation by DeepL; FP was mistranslated to "PC" and even "Parliament" on one occasion.}}, a developer.

and on february 25, 2023, owot became open source.

i discovered owot in november 2023 because someone spammed a link to it on another website i was using at the time, and so i checked owot out.

i came back again in february 2024 and i am also now running a newspaper for the website, called "[[our world of news]]"{{efn|Quotes were added to prevent calque translation by DeepL.}}
